Senate passes Stabenow bill to crack down on China's
currency manipulation |
|
In a bipartisan vote last night, the U.S. Senate passed
legislation co-authored by Senator Stabenow to crack down on
illegal currency manipulation by countries like China. By
keeping their currency undervalued, China is able to sell
the same products to American consumers at a much lower
cost, driving American companies out of business. Cracking
down on currency manipulation could allow the United States
to create as many as 2 million jobs.
“I've been fighting to stop China's illegal action on
currency for years, and the fact that the Senate has finally
passed this bill is a major victory for our businesses and
workers,” said Sen. Stabenow. “China's currency
manipulation directly translates to lost American jobs and
suffering for families, especially in Michigan. Standing up
to China to stop their illegal activity creates American
jobs and reduces the deficit at the same time.” |

Michigan gained the most tech jobs in the nation in 2010 |
Senator Debbie Stabenow joined with TechAmerica last week to
announce that Michigan gained more technology-related jobs than
any other state in 2010. This new study also revealed that
Michigan ranks 15th in the country in total number of workers in
the tech industry, at 155,000, showing that tech jobs are
playing an important role in Michigan’s ongoing economic
turnaround. “High tech jobs lay the foundation of our state’s
economic future. Efforts to grow research and development in
advanced battery, high tech vehicle production, and other
innovative new sectors of our economy are beginning to work and
should be strengthened,” said Senator Stabenow. “With all that
Michigan has been through and so many people still hurting, it’s
great to have some good economic news.” |

Sweet victory: Stabenow wins maple syrup from New York colleague
as Tigers beat Yankees |
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow won her friendly bet with New York
Senator Chuck Schumer when the Detroit Tigers defeated the New
York Yankees last Thursday to advance in the playoffs. Sen.
Schumer will now send a case of New York Savor Crown maple syrup
to Senator Stabenow, which she will donate to Gleaners Community
Food Bank of metro Detroit. Sen. Stabenow had wagered a case of
Michigan-made preserves from American Spoon. "This win is great
for the City of Detroit and the entire state. To my good friend
Chuck I have to say, we all knew the Tigers were going to win
from the beginning.” |
