Dear Mr. Kalasho:
Thank you for contacting my office regarding the horrific events that took
place in Iraq during a Chaldean Catholic church service on October 31, 2010,
which resulted in the murder of two priests and 58 parishioners.
I am shocked and saddened by this act of terror that took place at Our Lady
of Salvation Syriac Catholic Church in Baghdad, Iraq during Sunday worship
service. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to the
victims' families and the congregation of Our Lady of Salvation church.
For far too long, persecution and violence has plagued many of Iraq's
religious and ethnic minority groups, especially Iraq's Christian minority.
For this reason, many Iraqis have relocated to the United States where they
can worship free from threat. Southeastern Michigan has become home to a
large Iraqi Christian community and the largest Chaldean community in the
United States
I firmly believe that religious freedom is a universal right and needs to be
upheld and protected. In fact, in Iraq's own Constitution, strong protection
is given to religion and freedom of thought. It is time for Iraq's leader to
put these words into action by standing up for its people, including its
minority populations.
In America, we must send our strong condemnation against such senseless acts
of terror and violence. It is also important that we do everything we can to
assist the Iraqi government prepare its own security forces to ensure an
event like the one witnessed never occurs again.
Again, thank you for your correspondence. If you have any further questions
or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office. If you would like
