Senator Stabenow demands action on China's policy
requiring U.S. companies to turn over technology
secrets |
|
This morning, Senator Debbie Stabenow called for
action to stop China from forcing American companies
to hand over their advanced technologies. China has
shown a repeated pattern of violating international
trade laws by forcing American companies to transfer
technology and engineering secrets if they want to
sell their products to Chinese consumers.
"These types of shakedowns are another example of
China's disregard for fair trade and intellectual
property, and its willingness to violate trade rules
for its own advantage," Stabenow said. "We must
demand that China does not engage in action which
amounts to the theft of American-made technologies."

Detroit Patent & Trademark Office Moves Closer to
Reality, to be Named for Michigan Inventor Elijah McCoy |
Senator Stabenow has been a leader in the effort to
bring the country’s first regional patent office to
Detroit. The recently passed patent reform bill would
allow the Patent Office to pay for the new center with
application fees it already collects. "We need to make
it easy for entrepreneurs to get a patent and start
turning their innovative ideas into job-creating
businesses,” said Senator Stabenow. “A new Detroit
patent office will do that. Our state now leads the
country in clean energy patents, and it is also home to
groundbreaking research in agriculture, advanced
batteries, and autos, so it is fitting the first
satellite office in the country be located in Detroit.”
Thanks to Senator Stabenow’s leadership, the new office
will be named for Elijah McCoy, an African-American
inventor from Michigan. The saying, “the real McCoy,”
was coined to refer to his inventions on steam
locomotives in the late 1800s. |

Senator Stabenow's Statement on the 10th Anniversary of
9/11 Attacks |
"The 10th anniversary of 9-11 is a time for our country
to remember those who lost their lives and pay tribute
to the first responders and troops who sacrificed so
much then, and continue to put their lives on the line
for all of us today. This is a time to put politics
aside and renew the spirit of unity, cooperation and
public service that engulfed our nation a decade ago.
This is the best way to truly honor those who lost their
lives."
In October 2001, Senator Stabenow authored bipartisan
legislation to honor the victims of the September 11th
terrorist attacks. Stabenow's initiative, the Unity in
the Spirit of America (U.S.A.) Act, was signed into law
by President Bush in 2002 and resulted in 500,000 people
doing 5,000 volunteer projects across the country in
honor of each of the victims of the terrorist attacks.
