First piece of Debbie Stabenow's

"American Competitiveness Plan"

The Michigan Brief | News from the Office of Senator Debbie Stabenow

OCT 5   |   FEATURED STORY
First piece of Stabenow's "American Competitiveness Plan" passes key Senate vote
An overwhelmingly bipartisan majority in the U.S. Senate Monday voted to move forward on a bill cosponsored by Senator Debbie Stabenow to crack down on countries like China involved in artificially manipulating their currency.  The vote represented the measure's first hurdle and sets up a vote for final passage as early as this week. Senator Stabenow has been a leader in the effort to stop currency manipulation for years, and it seems now that the Senate may finally be poised to act.

"China's illegal currency manipulation directly translates to lost American jobs and suffering for families, especially in Michigan," said Senator Stabenow. "I've been fighting to stop China's illegal action on currency for years, and with bipartisan momentum growing, now is the time for Congress to finally get this done.  Standing up to China to stop this practice would create American jobs and reduce the deficit at the same time."

Detroit News: Stabenow to see currency bill finally taken up
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow is on the verge of seeing a measure finally come up for a vote that would impose higher U.S. duties on Chinese products to offset the perceived advantage critics say China gets by undervaluing its currency. "Our country needs to be exporting our products, not our jobs," Stabenow said. "It's long past time that Congress got tough with other countries who are violating international trade laws to give their own companies an anti-competitive advantage."

Michigan Radio: Stabenow pushes for action on trade violations
Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow says it’s time to get tough with countries that flout international trade rules. She’s pushing a three-part legislative package, the American Competitiveness Plan, that aims to crack down on those countries. Stabenow singles out China as the worst offender when it comes to manipulating international trade rules to its advantage. But the U.S. government has generally been reluctant to take action. Stabenow says the time to act is now. “It’s very important that we send a loud message to China and any other country that is manipulating their currency that it is illegal, it is unfair, and it needs to stop.”

Senator Stabenow bets on Tigers to take down Yankees
Senator Debbie Stabenow recently made a friendly wager with New York Senator Chuck Schumer over the outcome of the Major League Baseball playoffs series between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees. With the series tied at two games apiece, the Tigers look to close out the series tomorrow night in New York. If the Tigers win, Senator Schumer will send a case of New York’s Crown Maple Farm syrup to Senator Stabenow. If the Yankees win, Senator Stabenow will send a case of Michigan’s own American Spoon fruit preserves to Schumer. American Spoon’s preserves are only made from fruit grown and processed in Michigan. "I know I speak for the entire state when I say I'm so proud of the Tigers for their success already this year and I know the best is yet to come,” Stabenow said. “I can't wait to enjoy my pancake breakfast with New York Maple Syrup!”
